Regarding Queen & Country: it’s a great spy comic written by Greg Rucka. Apparently, they are making a movie with Ellen Page. And even though I like Page, I’m not sure she can pull it off — for one thing, I’ve never seen her do anything other than “quirky.” (Although I heard she was very good in Hard Candy, I haven’t seen it yet.) And Tara Chace is not quirky. She is almost the opposite of quirky.
To put this in perspective: the very first appearance of Tara Chace is her sniping an arms dealer in the head. Tara Chace will fuck you up good.
Also, Hollywood doesn’t have the best track record in adapting Rucka’s works (the horrible Whiteout movie was based on an excellent comic of his).
Honestly, I feel like if you haven’t seen a work that Page is known for being a powerhouse in (Hard Candy is the film that actually jumpstarted her career), then you really have no room to start judging her as Tara Chace. Her work outside of Juno, Whip It, and the X-Men franchise isn’t as well-known, which is a shame because it’s some of her best work. Go watch films like Hard Candy and Mouth to Mouth (all of these were when she was just a teenager) and you’ll understand why Ellen is a good fit for Tara Chace. If you want a fairly recent movie to judge her range off from, go watch The East. She’s fantastic in that and isn’t some “quirky” role. She’s also been training for this role since before it was even rumored that she snagged the role of Tara.
I’m a fan of Rucka’s work and have full confidence that if the script is well done that this will be a great film adaptation (though I think everyone agrees that the film adaptation of Whiteout was a piece of shit compared to the comic).
Get your typecasting the out of the Ellen Page tag because most of us that post in it are dedicated fans and have seen her range of work. We have enough of the “quirky” shit without people trying to point it out to us because that’s definitely not all she can do. We get tired of the million reposts of Juno gifs everyday in the tag. Those of us you see actively posting new information about her in the tag know our shit and have confidence in her in the role of Tara Chace because we know what she’s capable of.
